Batik & the Social Fabric of Southeast Asia

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗸 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱?

We’ve all seen traditional batik designs, but many of us may not be privy to how these beautiful, intricate designs are created, or their cultural significance to Singapore.

As part of the SG Batik Design Contest, Raffles Design Singapore is pleased to host a series of talks by local entrepreneur and philanthropist Mr. Jack SIM and Ms. Selmin ÖZBUDAK, Founder and Art Director of the Narart Gallery Istanbul, about how batik is an inextricable component of Singapore’s DNA and social fabric.

The talks are also accompanied by a Cold Wax Painting Workshop helmed by Raffles’ very own Madeleine WONG, where you can get a glimpse into how the wax-resist dyeing technique is used to make traditional batik design works.
