The course gives students the creative and technical knowledge and skills they need to become professionals in the animation industry. The emphasis is placed on the design and production aspects of 2D and 3D animation, including life drawing as well as background and character design. To enhance their competitive edge in the digital age, students learn to use state-of-the-art editing equipment in pre-production, production and post-production. They also acquire skills for creating moving imagery and special effects, which are currently in demand in the local and international film media and entertainment industries.

The rapidity of technological advancements in the fast-paced digital entertainment industry plays an important part of the changing scene of visual communication, including design disciplines such as animation and video game design. Recognising the need to keep pace with the rapidly evolving design environment, the Diploma in Animation & Game Design programme aims to provide students with an industry-focused learning platform to establish a solid foundation in animation and game media design.
The curriculum of the programme will be delivered in a mix of teaching strategies ranging from lectures and seminars to tutorials and technical demonstrations. Complemented with a comprehensive assessment framework, the pedagogic approach of the programme provides students with a positive learning experience that meets the intended learning objectives and outcomes.
Through practical-based modules in the programme, students will be introduced to a wide range of design concepts and creative problem-solving techniques involving strategic application of motion elements and animation principles. Its applications, as standalone solutions or parts of an integrated design, cover wide areas of visual communication and digital media including film and television programmes, game arts and trailers, interactive content for web and mobile apps, animated simulations for promotional and educational purposes, etc. Leveraging on the advanced technology in animation authoring tools, production techniques and media channels, the underpinnings of animation design revolve around the conceptualisation and production of engaging animated visual sequence to innovate visual design solutions to real-world issues and needs.
Today, the animation design industry is increasingly competitive and ever-evolving with technological advancements. In view of this, the Advanced Diploma in Animation Design programme is structured with emphasis on equipping students with industry-focused design knowledge and skill sets, as well as keeping them closely in touch with the technological development relevant to animation design.

Established techniques of leadership and management will be taught alongside access to the Faculty’s wide range of creative activities. Creative practitioners are increasingly being regarded as multi-disciplinary within the design industry. The course focuses on challenges and creative culture, as well as a deeper understanding of design processes, evaluation and expectations.
