Recapturing the Textile Culture: Arab Street x URA x Raffles Collaboration 2021

Recapturing the Textile Culture, Heritage & Memories of Arab Street

Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers designed this collection drawing inspiration from the history of Arab Street; fashion icon, singer and film actress Saloma; and street art. With the support from the Urban Redevelopment Authority, One Kampong Gelam and Arab Street merchants, this collaboration aims to recapture the textile culture, heritage, and memories of Arab Street. All fabrics and materials used for this fashion showcase were sourced from Arab Street.

In conjunction with Ramadan, Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers have designed collections inspired by the history of Arab Street; fashion icon, singer, and film actress Saloma; and street art, showcased at the launch of Cahaya Ramadan on 10 April 2021 (Sat) at the Malay Heritage Centre. Snippets can be found in the gallery below, from the Cahaya Ramadan livestream event by Visit Kampong Gelam, where Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers’ designs were showcased at the launch officiated by Minister for National Development & Minister-in-charge of Social Services, Mr Desmond Lee at the Malay Heritage Centre.

This fashion collection was well-received by the supporting organisations and partners like the Urban Redevelopment AuthorityOne Kampong Gelam, Arab Street merchants, and artiste Najip Ali.

Raffles Fashion Designer Onwaree SUKJUMROEN won Re.Mix Fashion Design Competition Popularity Contest

Raffles Fashion Designer Onwaree SUKJUMROEN won the Re.Mix Fashion Design competition Popularity Contest 2021. Onwaree’s design was inspired by peony flowers to create new silhouettes and shapes while retaining traditional elements like the Mandarin collar and print of the phoenix.  

Six Raffles Fashion Designers took part in the RE.MIX 2K21: Fashion Design Competition. This competition is organised by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC)  

The participants are to discover and rediscover what it means to be a Chinese Singaporean as the Chinese Singaporean identity is complex and always changing.  

The participating designers are:

Raffles Fashion Designer FAN XinTian Won at the Frankfurt Style Awards 2020

11 Raffles Fashion Designers were among the Top 60 Finalists at the Frankfurt Style Awards 2020. This year’s Frankfurt Style Awards 2020 motto is “Benefits of Change” and the competition was has 3 categories : Create your Revolution, Explore Cradle to Cradle, and Dream your Dreams. The motto was envisioned to reflect the “process of change” as “culture and conventions have changed; , bans have been abolished and new paradigms have defined the rules of coexistence. Fashion is the medium that reflects these transformations.”. 

Congratulations to Raffles Fashion Designer, Fan Xin Tian, for her place in the Top 10 at this year’s final, broadcasted live at Airport Club Frankfurt!

Raffles Design x Paragon Dress Sustainably Exhibition 

In collaboration with Paragon Shopping Centre, the “Dress Sustainably” exhibition was held from 25th November to 8th December 2020 at Paragon’s Level Three. 

Organized by Raffles International Fashion Business students, the exhibition showcased the creative works of Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers who turned fashion waste of fabric, scraps, labels, and discarded toys into exciting and appealing wearable art pieces. The visuals and a style similar to an art exhibition. 

Emphasising the message that “The future is now, fashion waste was last season”, we hope to inspire, through this exhibition, aspiring designers and consumers to participate in this sustainable fashion movement and to dress sustainably.

Raffles Fashion Designer Onwaree Sukjumreon won Sakura Collection Asia Student Awards in Singapore 2020

Sakura Collection Asia Student Awards 2020

A huge congratulations to Raffles Fashion Designer Onwaree SUKJUMROEN, National Winner at the Sakura Collection Asia Student Awards in Singapore 2020. She won with her featured collection entitled: “Onna Bugeisha”.

She will be representing Singapore, on an all paid trip to Tokyo, Japan, to compete against other national winners, in the Grand Prix of Sakura Collection Asia Student Awards 2020. In addition, she also had the chance to be the designer of an eco-bag for Citizen Watches.

Started in 2012, Sakura Collection aims at training young designers, bringing about a tourism boost to Japan and the promotion of cultural and economic exchange around Asia. Participants are tasked to design their collections based on the theme of “Japan”.

Congratulations to Raffles Fashion Designer Ms Onwaree SUKJUMROEN for your achievement and we wish you all the best at the Japan Grand Prix!
