Raffles College of Higher Education wins 3 Prestigious SG Mark Awards by Design Business Chambers Singapore (DBCS)

We are proud to announce that Raffles College of Higher Education has been awarded 3 of the prestigious Singapore Good Design (SG Mark) Award 2023 from the Design Business Chamber Singapore on 31 August 2023 at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre!

Kudos to Principal Giuseppe (Joe) SPINELLI Giuseppe Joe Spinelli for leading the Raffles Fashion Design Curriculum Team in integrating sustainability into Raffles’ fashion design curriculum to prepare our Raffles Fashion Designers for the future.

As part of Raffles Design curriculum promoting sustainability, we collaborated with METRO (Singapore) and SF Fiber to create stylish, versatile, and sustainable wardrobe for fashionable and busy professional ladies. This fashion collection, exclusive to Metro Department Store, embraces comfort, practicality, and responsible choices for a greener future.

We would also like to congratulate Raffles Fashion Designers Sean LOH and Sheila Agatha Wijaya for receiving this prestigious award for their business model, which trains and employs the underprivileged community to be part of their fashion label Sean  Sheila. Their submission for this award, named “Design with(out) Senses”, is a new and loud voice in the fashion industry.

The Grand Prix of Akoya Pearl Jewellery 2022 Singapore Edition

Raffles College of Higher Education is thrill to announce that two Raffles Jewellery Designers, ZHANG Yiqi and NG Yu Kee are in the top 30 entries in this competition.

Their designs are showcased in the exhibition at Japanese Creative Centre (JCC) at the Opening Ceremony. The top 30 entries will be on display for public voting from 9th to 18th February 2023. Raffles Jewellery Designer NG Yu Kee won the 3rd runner-up in this year’s competition, beating out of more than 100 entries received for this year’s competition. Congratulations to all winners, and great job to all participants!

Recapturing the Textile Culture Heritage & Memories of Arab Street 2021 Season 2
Raffles x URA x OKG Collaboration 2021

Following the successful collaboration with the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and One Kampong Glam Visit Kampong Gelam on recapturing the textile culture at Arab Street, Singapore, we are proud to debut Season 2 of Recapturing the Textile Culture Heritage & Memories of Arab Street.

After the virtual walkabout of Arab Street conducted by Ms Stella WEE of URA, and with the overview of the history and current development of the precinct, Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers headed down to Arab Street to commence their research for their fashion collections. In support of the Arab Street merchants, Raffles Designers sourced all the textiles and haberdashery within the precinct to share their stories of Arab Street through their designs.

Eight collections drawing inspirations from the architecture of Sultan Mosque, woven baskets once sold at Arab Street, Malay literature, kebayas, batik printing, kris (an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade-patterning), etc, were created to illustrate the rich culture of the street.

This Industry and Community Engagement project offers Raffles Designers the opportunities to apply their design thinking skills to provide creative solutions for a real-life challenge.

Every September issue of Vogue Singapore magazine acts as a seasonal reset, as they mark the end of the Spring/Summer and transition into Fall/Winter fashion. This year’s September issue of Vogue provides a forecast of the upcoming trends for the year and Raffles Singapore is proud to share that Raffles Fashion Designer Jenny Giang NGUYEN is one of the four featured Asian designers, as she expresses her hopes for the future as a graduate of Coventry University’s Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in Fashion.

Congratulations to Raffles Fashion Designers, Jenny Le Huong Giang, Theochara Missiel Maretha, and Shelby Nguyen Lam Anh, for emerging as the top 12 finalists of this year’s Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award Competition.

Since the inception of this award, Raffles has been a huge supporter and we are proud to have several Raffles Fashion Designers who won the Asia and regional competitions in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, starting with the very first Asia winner in 2013, Mr Harvee KOK, Mr William UTAMA in 2016, and Mr Andrew LOW in 2018. The New Luxury – Raffles x UrbanHair 2021

The New Luxury by Urbanhair

Urbanhair, founded by Mr Eugene ONG, has worked with celebrities including international names like Michelle Yeoh, Joan Chen, and Christy Chung.

When conceptualising the new salon concept, Eugene has, in response to the pandemic, taken into consideration the provision of a safe and hygienic environment for customers to look and feel great in. Eugene has tasked Raffles Fashion Marketers to develop a marketing campaign to promote the new salon concept and its services, situated at its new location at Shaw Centre, Orchard Road.

Five teams of Raffles Fashion Marketers presented their proposals to Mr Eugene ONG with recommendations for Urbanhair’s website, social media engagements using Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and promotional mechanisms and events for his consideration and implementation.

The winning concept went to The New Luxury by Evania Jocelin Budiharto, Miranthi Putri Fitrianda, and Yong Le Yee (Alex), while the first runner-up went to Bunag Danielle Lauren Guieb, Shenia Aurelia, and Liang Yizhi (Maggie).

Participating in such industry projects provides Raffles Marketers the platform to apply their marketing knowledge outside of the classroom and gain global perspective.

The tutelage of Raffles’ international pool of Creative Practitioners, and having an internationally recognised UK degree with a strong industry focused curriculum and portfolio, enhances Raffles Fashion Marketing graduates’ employability and immediate contribution to the creative industry upon graduation.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, instead of debuting the graduating class of Raffles Fashion Designers on the runway, Raffles Singapore organised a private preview for the fashion media and industry partners to view these graduates’ collections and meet the designers in person at Raffles Education Square.

Raffles Fashion Designers, NGUYEN Le Huong Giang, Gemma WU Pui Shan, Eva HUANG and Theochara Missiel MARETHA, caught the eye of Harper’s BAZAAR fashion editor, Jeffrey YAN.

Design Orchard has collaborated with Raffles in their latest event, Heritage Festival which runs from 23 July to 31 August 2021. Raffles Designers and Marketers from the Fashion Marketing Department, Jewellery, Interior and Product Design department were tasked to apply their visual merchandising knowledge in designing the window displays for the Heritage Festival.

9 proposals were submitted by the students, Design Orchard selected the winning design from our multi-disciplinary team:

Raffles Fashion Marketers: Iyer Ashwini GANESH+D121, Agarwal KUSHI, Vinca Vanessa SHALIM and Yuvan YOLANDA
Raffles Product Designer: Sequeira Thea LATITIA
Raffles Jewellery Designer: Teresa Pavita MAHARANI

Design Orchard is an integrated retail and incubation space that puts Singapore’s designers and their creative pieces in the limelight.

In July 2021, Augustman Magazine Singapore featured Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designer graduates and their award-winning fashion collections.

“Singapore may not necessarily be considered a fashion capital, but we sure do have an abundance of aspiring fashion designers who might put us on the list next.

Earlier this month, I attended the graduation showcase by Raffles College of Higher Education, and I must say, phenomenal is an understatement of their work. Despite the disruption to face-to-face learning, thanks to (not really) the pandemic, the graduating cohort perpetuated through the global catastrophe, producing stellar work for their final project – with 34% of these students graduating with a first-class honours degree.” Amos Chin, fashion editor of Augustman.
