Safety Starts with Me, Design Competition 2021
Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHCouncil)

Congratulations to Raffles Graphic Designers in winning Bronze and Consolation prizes in the Poster Design (Open Category) at the Safety Starts with Me competition, organised by Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHCouncil). The Bronze Award goes to Raffles Graphic Designer Alanis HARJANTO, TRUONG That Tam and Consolation Award goes to WANG ShiYuan.

Safety Starts with Me design competition is an annual competition organised by Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHCouncil) and supported by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to promote awareness of safety and health at the workplace through art and design.

This year’s theme was “Take time to take care of your safety and health”.

Raffles College of Higher Education continues to support and mentor designers in participating in competitions and collaborations in order to provide for industry focused experiences for designers to learn from and build their portfolio for future employability.

In July 2021, Augustman Magazine Singapore featured Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designer graduates and their award-winning fashion collections.

“Singapore may not necessarily be considered a fashion capital, but we sure do have an abundance of aspiring fashion designers who might put us on the list next.

Earlier this month, I attended the graduation showcase by Raffles College of Higher Education, and I must say, phenomenal is an understatement of their work. Despite the disruption to face-to-face learning, thanks to (not really) the pandemic, the graduating cohort perpetuated through the global catastrophe, producing stellar work for their final project – with 34% of these students graduating with a first-class honours degree.” Amos Chin, fashion editor of Augustman.

Raffles College of Higher Education is proud to be a part of the SIDSFest 2021 and participated in the Generation Next Exhibition and Student Sharing sessions. Raffles Interior Designers featured are Gordon TRAN, Clarita MELINA, Jennifer KOSASIH, KHO Siv Mey and Thanakorn SENSATHIEN. Of which, Raffles Interior Designer Gordon TRAN was invited as a panellist at the Generation Next – Student Sharing session. Generation Next – Student Sharing session was organised by Society of Interior Designers, Singapore (SIDS) Student Chapter.

GENERATION NEXT – EXIBITITION

The project of each Raffles Interior Design student is unique because they are very personal to each student. They provide design solutions to a wide variety of complex real-life space problems. The students’ projects tackle social or environmental issues specific to their country of origin, and some incorporate sustainable design. The emphasis is placed on complex spatial design, creative problem-solving, communication skills, knowledge of building materials and construction.

The project displayed here are varied. Strong in the theme of sustainability are a biophilic design University to raise awareness for sustainable design, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and a sustainable collaboration co-working space for designers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Other projects focus on youth and education, such as a street youth centre and social housing in Thailand, an education centre for youth promoting urban farming in Singapore, and a collaborative culinary hybrid space for youth promoting food industry in Indonesia.

SIDFest 2021 celebrates the positive perspective and invites designers to create experiences using the tools of Interior Design – materials, lights, colours, textures and spaces.

Raffles Fashion Designer ZHAO Xueer wins 2nd prize at Coventry University Global Challenge 2021

2021 Coventry University Global Challenge

Congratulations to Raffles Fashion Designer ZHAO Xueer, BA (Hon) in Fashion, Class of 2020 for winning the 2nd Prize in the 2021 Coventry University Global Challenge.

Xueer’s fashion collection is her imagination of what people would wear in 50 years’ time. She created the looks based on the three environment issues which mankind will face in areas of water, air, and waste management. She hopes her designs will educate people about the future we are going to live in, and the apparels that one should wear with these environmental conditions in mind.

Coventry has been awarded the status of 2021 UK City of Culture, and as part of the celebrations, Coventry University has launched a Faculty of Arts & Humanities competition exclusively for students at their partner institutions. Inspired by the City of Culture award and as they look to the city’s future, Raffles Designers had the opportunity to make creative responses to the United Nation’s 11th Sustainable Development Goal: ‘Sustainable Cities’.

Recapturing the Textile Culture: Arab Street x URA x Raffles Collaboration 2021

Recapturing the Textile Culture, Heritage & Memories of Arab Street

Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers designed this collection drawing inspiration from the history of Arab Street; fashion icon, singer and film actress Saloma; and street art. With the support from the Urban Redevelopment Authority, One Kampong Gelam and Arab Street merchants, this collaboration aims to recapture the textile culture, heritage, and memories of Arab Street. All fabrics and materials used for this fashion showcase were sourced from Arab Street.

In conjunction with Ramadan, Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers have designed collections inspired by the history of Arab Street; fashion icon, singer, and film actress Saloma; and street art, showcased at the launch of Cahaya Ramadan on 10 April 2021 (Sat) at the Malay Heritage Centre. Snippets can be found in the gallery below, from the Cahaya Ramadan livestream event by Visit Kampong Gelam, where Raffles Fashion and Jewellery Designers’ designs were showcased at the launch officiated by Minister for National Development & Minister-in-charge of Social Services, Mr Desmond Lee at the Malay Heritage Centre.

This fashion collection was well-received by the supporting organisations and partners like the Urban Redevelopment Authority, One Kampong Gelam, Arab Street merchants, and artiste Najip Ali.

Congratulations to Raffles Interior Designer MUN Sebeen for winning this design challenge with her design titled “Mobaya”. “Mobaya” is a luxury modern phone and accessory tabletop stand inspired by the Peranakan Kebaya.

The College is honoured to have Ms Verene NG, CEO of RISIS, to grace our campus and announce the winning design. The winning design was selected based on its commercial viability and representation of RISIS’ brand ethos. RISIS will strongly consider adding this design to their product offering for their customers.
